Meaning Behind the Piece:

Liberté explores the idea of freedom as something remembered rather than discovered.

In the painting, the horse is not simply a companion to the woman. It represents the untamed part of her own spirit. She is not riding it and she is not standing beside it. Instead, the two appear almost merged, reflecting the moment when a woman no longer looks outside herself to find freedom, but recognises that it has always existed within her.

Her closed eyes suggest a turning inward rather than a withdrawal from the world. It is a moment of reconnection with the instinctive, unshaped part of herself that existed long before expectations or roles began to define who she should be.

The textures and movement surrounding her echo natural elements such as earth, wind, and memory. Together they create a sense of raw energy that is both powerful and gentle, reminding us that true freedom is not forceful or dramatic. When it is real, it arrives quietly, through recognition rather than escape.

Liberté honours that moment of remembering. The moment when a person stops searching for permission to be free and instead realises that freedom was never something anyone else had the power to give.

About the Painting Process

Each of my paintings is created through layers of mixed media, allowing colour, texture, and mark making to evolve naturally over time. I work intuitively, responding to what the painting begins to reveal rather than forcing it into a predetermined outcome.

Because of this layered process, every piece carries subtle details that continue to reveal themselves over time.

Where This Piece Belongs

This painting works beautifully in spaces where art is meant to be felt rather than simply noticed, above a console table, in a living room, or in a quiet reading corner where colour and presence can anchor the space.

Seen Up Close

In person the surface carries far more depth than photographs can capture. Subtle textures, layered colour transitions, and small marks appear differently as light moves across the canvas throughout the day.
